Cross-Balaton Swim In Hungary, 20 July

The 2013 Lake Balaton cross swimming competition is planned to take place on Saturday 20 july 2013. By tradition the 5.2-kilometre competition starts at Révfülöp port and finishes at Platan beach in Balatonboglár. Participants are welcome to start swimming anytime between 8 am & 2 pm.

I’ve long been a supporter of British lifesavers. Ever since I briefly was a lifesaver myself as a student holiday job. And recently I’ve become a trustee of the Lifeboat Fund in the UK. So I’ve been looking for a chance to pick up that cause now that I’m here in Hungary. I’m very pleased to say I’ve found it.

Again – for the 3rd year – a number of important charities have teamed up to organize a major cross communal fundraising charity event called the FunRun. The event is managed by Maccabi VAC Hungary and the 15 charities are presently involved.

After doing my first Balaton Swim with Kevin Jackson 3 years ago for charity (raising money for the Hungarian Fair Trade Campaign), I have impatiently been waiting to do a second. Two years ago, after many weather postponements, the event was cancelled. Last year I had to pull out with 3 slipped disks. With the UEFA Euro 2012 approaching, more and more alternative locations pop up for watching the matches. The pubs and venues in town are striving to attract soccer fans with extreme screen sizes and tempting drink specials. One may choose to go with friends, the whole family, to rainproof places or to ones with huge displays, and it may also matter how many beers your money is worth.
