Suddenly shiny Spar, Lidl, and Aldi stores have appeared in formerly unused street front retail space in classical old buildings in busy inner city locations in Budapest. Traditionally these chains choose locations in the suburbs or just outside town with adequate space in new facilities and large parking lots. Why this compromise in shelf space and business plan? Why now?

- 1 Mar 2013 8:00 AM

One of my favorite things to do on Saturday mornings is to visit Ecseri Piac. A junker’s paradise, Ecseri is the largest and most famous flea market in Budapest. You can find just about anything there: old teddy bears, clocks, furniture, paintings, communist relics, false teeth. Since I’m a regular, several of the vendors recognize me. - 20 Sep 2012 1:03 AM

2014 Update: It was closed down. Hungary is not the most multicultural nation on the planet. 95% Magyar, 2% Roma, and the rest of us. Around 100,000 Chinese live in Hungary, and Budapest has its own Chinatown, well, a sprawling China-shanty-town. It's a real oddity, and if not the most immediate of local attractions, it is a side of the city that's bafflingly interesting, in a grimy kind of way. ...

Having a free Sunday morning on my hands, a friend and I visited the Szimplakert Haztaji Market. The great ambiance was still there. Almost every seller had samples out to try, whether it be szorp, jam, baked goods, spreads or cheese. All the sellers were friendly, chatty, and proud of their products.
Xpat Opinion: Best Flea Market In Budapest

The other is a good deal smaller, held in the city park at weekends. For my money, this is a more sensible, manageable alternative; it's perfectly possible to roll out of bed, onto public transport, through Városliget and right up to the ...
