Formed in London in 1987, the Balanescu Quartet ranks as one of the world’s leading string quartets. The intention of its founder, Romanian-born Alexander Balanescu, was to rise above generic limitations and create a new musical universe in which contemporary classical music, pop, jazz, folk traditions and electronic music might strike a common chord.

Parno Graszt is Romany for “white horse”, where the colour represents purity and the equine animal is a symbol of freedom. The Roma folk ensemble bearing this name was founded 20 years ago, during which time its nine members have themselves gathered a wealth of musical material from the 1,300-strong village of Paszab and its surroundings in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county. "Those accustomed to the whacky concert image of Vad Fruttik and the easy, frivolous freedom of their Bohemian songs probably cannot imagine them participating in a conceptual and structured performance at the Festival Theatre.
