The Hungarian Parliament today approved legislation putting an end to a year-old law that required retailers to stay closed on Sundays, according to Hungarian news agency MTI. The legislation was approved in an expedited procedure after the government proposed it yesterday. According to reports, the law will still remain in effect for this Sunday.

Thanks to government mandated cuts to utility fees, Hungary has the second lowest price of natural gas in the European Union based on purchasing power parity (PPP), Fidesz MP Szilárd Németh told a press conference in Budapest. Whereas in 2010 Hungary was the country where consumers had to pay the most for gas in the EU, now only Romania has lower gas prices, based on PPP exchange rates.

The bulk purchasing price of milk was 100 forints per litre a year ago but earlier agreed contractual prices have fallen to 75-77 per litre and spot market prices are as low as 72-73 forints per litre, business daily Világgazdaság reported. Production costs for most range between 95- 98 forints per litre according to the paper and only subsidies are keeping many producers from going bankrupt.
