Budapest Airport Announces Layoffs
"Budapest Airport will lay off 250 people and postpone a €60 million investment due to the loss of passenger traffic caused by the bankruptcy of state airline Malév, the airport operator announced yesterday.

When Malév collapsed Budapest Airport immediately lost 1.5 million transfer passengers, who were making use of the airline’s connecting flights.

Capacity expansions announced by low-cost carriers will bring in an additional 1 million passengers. However, Malév carried a total of 3.2 million passengers last year.

The airport operator will also face losses stemming from the decline in revenues from leasing office and parking space and from the maintenance unit.

In light of the current situation, Budapest Airport has decided on a cost-cutting programme that will entail the termination of 250 jobs, or 20-25% of the workforce, and postponing a €60 million investment planned for 2012."
