Two Kayak Gold Medals For Hungary
Hungarian athletes won gold medals in two rowing events on Wednesday, raising the national total to six. Rudolf Dombi and Roland Kokeny pipped a Portuguese duo for first place in the men's 1,000-metre kayak pairs race.

Later in the day the women's foursome of Gabriella Szabo, Danuta Kozak, Katalin Kovacs and Krisztina Fazekas-Zur won the 500-metre race, relegating Germany to silver for the first time since 1992.

Hungary finished second in this event in the three previous Olympic competitions.

However, defending Olympic champion Attila Vajda placed sixth in the 1,000 metres canoeing final.

The Hungarian men's water polo team will not achieve a record fourth straight gold medal, having lost to Italy 11-9 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The men's handball team advanced to the semi-finals with a surprise 34-33 win over a strong Iceland side after two extra time periods. Hungary will next meet Sweden.

With three days of competition remaining, Hungary is ninth in the overall medal standings with six gold medals, two silver and three bronze.
