EU Likely To Condemn Hungary Tax-Free Home Distillery
The European Court of Justice is expected to pass a decision concerning Hungary’s current practice of exempting individuals from paying excise tax on less than 50 litres of home-distilled fruit brandy pálinka, national daily Magyar Nemzet reported on Friday.

Referring to unnamed EU sources, the paper said that the ruling will go against Hungary, and the country will be obliged to roll out the excise tax on any amount of the traditional spirit made at home.

The Hungarian Economy Ministry is looking for ways to maintain the taxfree status of home distilling, the paper added.

The government lifted an earlier ban on home distillation in 2010. “The government has to defend this achievement,” Economy Minister Mihály Varga said on Friday.
