Merkel Congratulates Hungary’s PM Orbán On Election Victory
German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel has congratulated Hungarian premier Viktor Orbán on his win in Sunday’s election, the head of Orbán’s press office said. The repeat of Fidesz’s large majority carries a special responsibility to use it soberly and sensitively, Merkel said in a letter.

“In doing so, you can continue to count on Germany as a reliable partner in Europe,” the chancellor said. Merkel noted that Berlin and Budapest are to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the dismantling the Iron Curtain.

Hungary played the first and decisive role in surmounting Europe’s divisions, her letter added. “In this spirit, I’m glad about our continued cooperation,” Merkel said, wishing Orbán every success.
