Hungary's Top Court Rejects Referendum On Paks
The Constitutional Court on Tuesday upheld decisions by the National Election Committee and the Kúria in declaring that no referendum can be held on the €10 billion loan agreement with Russia for financing the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant.

The majority on the Court said the Basic Law bans referendums on international agreements.

The Together-Dialogue alliance had taken the question to the Court as it wanted to start a campaign for a referendum on the issue.

The question submitted by Viktor Szigetvári and Benedek Jávor was “Do you agree that no new nuclear reactor blocks should be built in Hungary from a loan that will increase the state debt?”

The Together-Dialogue alliance accepts the ruling but observed that the Court did not examine the question substantively.
