Budapest’s largest community gardens opened on an area of 2,600 square metres in south-east Budapest. The project converted a derelict lot used previously by Magyar Telekom into 100 garden plots of some 8 square metres each where nearby residents can grow vegetables, fruit and herbs.

Fans of J.K. Rowling will remember that a Common Welsh Dragon featured in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, the fourth book of her immensely popular series. That dragon was green in colour, but the dragon on the flag flying outside the British Embassy today is a vibrant red.

Budapest’s famous Museum of Fine Arts on Heroes’ Square is to close its doors to visitors for a three-year period of reconstruction. Work on the iconic neo-Renaissance and neo-Classicist building, designed by architects Albert Schickedanz and Ferenc Fülöp Herzog and built between 1900 and 1906, will begin as early as next February.

The memorial wall remembering the Jewish ghetto in Budapest has been inaugurated in Dohány utca, on this wall of remembrance a map introduces the history of the area. The realization of this memorial wall was jointly financed by EMIH Egységes Magyarországi Izraelita Hitközség (Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation) and the Municipality of Erzsébetváros district.

The two people who were arrested earlier in connection with a disastrous fire that broke out yesterday in one of the apartment buildings of Budapest’s prestigious Andrássy Avenue, were released, the district prosecutor said on Wednesday. The district prosecution found no substantive evidence that would have justified keeping the men in custody.
