The president of the European Union should enforce Europe’s regulations rather than criticise those that already do so, Hungarian foreign minister Péter Szijjártó said on Monday. Referring to remarks by Jean Asselborn, the foreign minister of Luxembourg, the rotating president of the EU, Szijjarto said, “Hungary is one of the few countries in Europe that promote all EU rules concerning migration.”

Parliament observed a minute of silence, while the government paid tribute to Göncz in a statement of condolences, saying that as the first head of state of a free democratic Hungary, Göncz had “served his ten years in office to the best of his ability”.
