Balog Marks 1956 Anniversary At Ceremony In Berlin

Zoltán Balog, Hungary’s human resources minister, attended a ceremony marking the upcoming anniversary of the 1956 anti-Soviet revolution at Berlin’s Konzerthaus. At the ceremony organised by the Hungarian Embassy, the minister thanked Germany for its solidarity with the people who fled Hungary after the failed uprising.

Count Gyula Andrássy’s Statue Inaugurated In Kossuth Square

House Speaker László Kövér inaugurated a mounted statue of Count Gyula Andrássy, Hungary’s prime minister between 1867 and 1871, in front of Parliament in Kossuth Square. The reconstructed Andrássy statue will return to its original place in its former glory, he said, noting that its inauguration completes the process of restoring the pre-1944 look of the Square.

Two new venues were added to this year's festival, two beautiful synagogues: one on Bethlen square and one in Hegedűs Gyula street. Fans of early music can hardly wait for the end of the Opera’s season each year. Little wonder, either, for true to our tradition of the last three years, we are again closing it out with a Baroque opera. The final premiere in the Shakespeare Season of the Hungarian State Opera is Henry Purcell’s semi-opera, The Fairy Queen turned into opera noir by director András Almási-Tóth.

To mark the start of the Shakespeare season, the Hungarian State Opera will host Shakespeare400+ festival in honour the esteemed playwright. This year, 17 adaptations will be presented in four different venues (the Opera House, Erkel Theatre, Music Academy and Müpa), including popular plays like Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
