It is nothing out of the ordinary to walk down any stairwell in the city, either on your way to the metro or to the other side of the street, and have a musical tune fill your ears. Now this tune can be beautiful or can just as easily cause you to quicken your pace to the nearest exit of relief. Within seconds one knows whether they have entered into the audience of a skilled musician or a not so ...

It is Sunday evening. We had such wonderful weather here in Budapest this weekend that I just didn't know what I should do first to be able to tell you about it later so you could do it too once you get the chance, and here I am now...contemplating how to tell you what NOT to do, EVER.

Xpat Opinion: Living In The Hungarian Countryside
- 21 Feb 2013 10:35 AM
- getting around
Once upon a time, László and Linda Kondor would have been greatly entertained by the idea that urbanites such as themselves would be happy retiring in Kapolcs Village on a vineyard estate in the Hungarian countryside. Both had lived, and worked for decades in both the city of Chicago and Budapest, but late 2007 found them doing just that - walking away from all they owned and retiring to the ...

Xpat Opinion: Hidden Budapest: Gasworks Part 2
- 18 Sep 2012 9:00 AM
- getting around

On my way back from my bike ride yesterday I explored the area, and was correct.
Xpat Opinion: Shoes On The Danube In Budapest
- 11 Sep 2012 9:00 AM
- getting around
If you listen to anyone talking about the Second World War, and more specifically, the systematic extermination of Europe's Jewish population, you will more-likely-than-not hear some variation on the phrase ‘Lest we forget.’ The poignant Jewish memorial on the Pest bank of the Danube is so discreet that you're unlikely to spot it. If you try to find it from the direction of the Parliament, you ...
Xpat Opinion: Obuda Gas Factory - A Cool Place To Explore
- 29 Aug 2012 9:04 AM
- getting around
I have been cycling up to Romai Part and Szentendre for years, and have always loved the four water and coal-clock towers at the old gas works. Luckily they have managed to survive (so far) the reconstruction of the old chemical works as an industrial park. In 1908 a municipal decision was made to replace several obsolete gas factories with a single new facility.
