Hungarians Know Little About Russia
Almost half of Hungarians, 47%, view Russia – at times as an empire and at times as centre of the Soviet Union – as a historical enemy of Hungary, according to a recent poll. In this respect Russians are second behind Turks, whereas Russia was first in the previous survey six years ago.

The survey by Tárki, commissioned by the Russian studies institute of Eötvös Loránd University, reveals that 45% of the Hungarian population cannot name any Russian historical or literary personalities.

Closer political ties with Russia are supported by 44%, as against 38% six years ago, while 68%, rather than 65% are in favour of boosting economic ties.

However, only 57% support the furthering of cultural and scientific relations, down from 61% in 2006.
