Hungary's Minister Of Human Resources Gives In To Students On Funding
The government will finance those 16 areas of study which it had not intended to finance, Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog announced after meeting with the national students group HÖOK on Thursday. “We gave in to students’ demands,” Balog admitted after the talks.

HÖOK president Dávid Nagy called their success an “important milestone”.

He told reporters that 15-20% of students could receive state support, but the areas of study affected by state funding will require students to reach a higher threshold.

Next year the government will provide at least 55,000 state-funded places for students, Népszabadság reports.

A separate agreement on students contracts is expected to be reached by April, Balog said. The contracts are expected to be modified.

Balog said the ministry will hold talks with university administrators on other questions.

The government is not aiming to withdraw funds from higher education, he continued, adding that funding for research universities will be increased by Ft 10 billion.
