Opposition Parties In Hungary Offer No Credible Alternative, Says Kövér
The political left has no real programme to offer to voters and has been unable to level genuine criticism at the government’s performance, László Kövér, the speaker of parliament, said on Thursday.

Interviewed by MTI in Eger in northern Hungary, Kövér said he was not surprised at the weakening of the left at all. “What really surprises me is that the united left still enjoys a support larger than what they are worthy of,” he said. The opposition LMP party seems to stand a chance of making it into parliament due partly to the “weakness” of the left, he said.

Kövér said he would not overestimate the recent “relative increase” in support for radical nationalist Jobbik. That party, he said, does not seem to have “a serious chance” to either outperform its 2010 election result or really close the gap behind the governing parties.

Kövér said a party with a credo to act responsibly for the country cannot have a hostile approach to foreign capital because a departure of foreign investors would lead to millions of people losing their jobs.

Neither can it be an approach to single out and “attack” banks and bankers, because it is they who finance Hungarian entrepreneurs, he said.
