New Fidesz Bill In Hungary Closes RTL Loophole
Fidesz moved yesterday to amend the advertising tax, approved earlier this month, following reports that a last-minute change to the bill may have saved RTL Klub Ft 3 billion in taxes this year. That change, seen as benefiting rival TV2, allowed companies to deduct previous years’ losses from their tax base.

The benefit to RTL was not reported until after the advertising tax bill, passed on June 11, was signed into law by President János Áder on June 17.

Economy Minister Mihály Varga declared last week that RTL had reduced its tax base by unfair means, and ordered an inquiry.

The most important section of Monday’s amendment, submitted, like the initial legislation, by Fidesz MP László L. Simon, is meant to ensure that RTL Klub will have to pay more taxes, Index observes.
