Hungary’s PM Orbán: Europe In Spiritual Crisis
Europe is in a serious spiritual crisis because the community spends too much on welfare while its share in the global economy is shrinking, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in an interview published online by Germany’s Die Welt.

Europe should face the fact that it is no longer the most dynamic region of the world. This is a precondition for defining an appropriate economic policy, the premier said.

Concerning the European currency, Orbán said that “the euro project is stuck” and suggested that its future was questionable. He said that countries outside the euro zone were “not so eager” to join, and that the economy of those countries was now growing faster than their peers using the euro.

On the subject of European and US criticism concerning democratic values in Hungary, Orbán said that the European Commission had thoroughly screened Hungary after the country had adopted its new constitution.

Concerning charges of corruption, Orbán said that Hungary applies the principle of zero tolerance for graft. “We take criticism by the US very seriously and will evaluate all information that they have released to us,” the prime minister said.

Referring to the Ukraine crisis, Orbán said that Germany’s foreign policy was a guideline for Hungary. He said that the EU should be prepared to spend “a lot of money” on Ukraine.
