Anger Over Political Speech From Austrian Actor In Budapest
National Theatre director Attila Vidnyánszky has demanded an explanation after an actor from Vienna’s Burgtheater read out a political statement after a show at the Madach Theatre on Sunday. Following the Burgtheater’s performance of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, Austrian actor Martin Reinke read out a statement in German and English expressing awareness of “the difficult situation in which the great Hungarian people and cultural life find themselves at present” and expressing concern that Hungary is moving “farther away from the spirit of democracy and from Europe”.

In a letter to Burgtheater director Karin Bergman, Vidnyánszky declared “I believe that neither in Hungary nor anywhere in the world is it tasteful to read straight political letters from the stage for an audience which hardly comes to a performance for this reason”.
