Hungarians Unfamiliar With Muslim Culture
Hungarians are not as “open to the world” as perhaps other European countries would like it, and the reason is that Hungary has never experienced immigration from “Muslim cultures”, and the memories of 150 years of Turkish rule are “not that great”, Péter Györkös, the Hungarian ambassador in Berlin, said in an interview. Hungarians are not “naive romantics” to think that the integration of Muslims is so easy, he told the online version of Rheinische Post on Monday.

He said there are clear differences of opinion between Hungary and Germany on the reasons for the influx of refugees as well as the measures taken to address it.

Hungary thinks “this is not a refugee crisis but immigration,” he added.

Györkös also commented on the issue of paying contributions towards EU measures on refugees and potential sanctions for countries who do not want to take in refugees, saying such sanctions would be “an attempt to put the blame on eastern European countries”.
