Government Abandons Program Intended To Lure Young Hungarians Back Home
Minister of National Economy Mihály Varga announced Tuesday that the government would end its “Gyere Haza Fiatal!” (“Come home, youth!”) program. This program was the government’s failed way of luring back young Hungarians who had emigrated to seek employment abroad.

Last week, Index.hu published a report outlining the government’s lackluster program. According to Index, after spending some HUF 100 million in public funds to persuade the young to return to their motherland, the government managed to provide employment for only 105 of them since the program launched in April 2015.

It is no big secret that Hungary is struggling with its own outward migration crisis. Estimates place the number who have left the country to work elsewhere between 350,000 and 500,000. It is estimated that some 200,000 Hungarians are working in London alone.
