The U.S. Ambassador to Hungary said a proposal by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to target media and civic groups was potentially “very dangerous” as the leader prepares to unveil the latest crackdown on independent institutions, according to Bloomberg News.
The 30th congress of ruling Fidesz re-elected Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as the party’s leader on Saturday. In his speech to the congress, Orbán said it was an “honour” to be given the mandate to lead the “most successful political community of the country, of Europe”.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Friday praised grassroots civic circles and local communities, and said they were key to the strength and success of Hungary and to ruling Fidesz’s entering into power, the PM’s press chief said.
At a plenary of the European Parliament on the use of spy software, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said all member states had an obligation to protect their citizens from unlawful state surveillance, in physical reality as well as in cyberspace.
