Xpat Interview: Judit Makrai
I was born and raised in Budapest. Lived a few months in Vienna and Dover. I am supposedly a clothing engineer in product development, but never worked as one.

Still worked close to the textile industry for 4-5 years, but more in the direction of marketing and sales, e.g. for the former Hungarian Fashion Institute, Coats Hungary and a textile machine import-export company.

I was always fond of languages, translating and interpreting was always part of my job. I also did part time translating when given a chance, so I became freelance in 2001. My personal target field is that of technical translations. I enjoy being an entrepreneur, even if ever so small and even if Hungary is not the friendliest environment for small and micro businesses at the moment.

I built up a group of skilled translators over the years (everyone translating exclusively into their native languages), so now we cover a wider range of language pairs with our services.

 

1. Where did you grow up?
Budapest, sometimes summers near Sopron

2. What Hungarian traditions bring back fond memories of your childhood?
Just Hungarian? All traditional family holidays bring back fond memories.

3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?
Other than family and friends it would be the smell of Autumn forests, maybe "lecsó", because there aren't many "TV paprika" growing abroad :o)

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Just 2 days? Regular castle tour, visit St. Stephen's Basilica and Synagogue, Gellért hill by night, walk on the river bank, maybe go to a bath, have some duck liver and Tokaji. Museums, exhibitions depending on their interest. Maybe do a short hiking in Hármashatár hill. Cycle to "Római-part" and have some "hekk" or "lángos", continue to Szentendre and have some ice-cream. Go to Liszt Ferenc square or Ráday street for a few drinks and dance at a club in Nagymez? street or an outdoor club, if it is summer.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Lots. Maybe "Hortobágyi húsos palacsinta" is the best, but I make it entirely differently than in restaurants. I became a fan of salads, which is not characteristic of most Hungarians.

6. What is never missing from your kitchen?
Tomatoes, milk, everything in the recipe of the bread I usually make.

7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?
Anywhere where "germersdorfi cseresznye" grows :o)

8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Retail sales in interior decoration, might just do it some time in the future

9. What?s a job you would definitely never want?
Parking controller

10. Where did you spend your last vacation?
England and Greece

11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Anywhere in Europe

12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Tina Turner, Eurythmix, films with Pierre Richard

13. What can?t you resist?
Grilling with friends

14. Red wine or white?
Both, even rosé, just semi sweet, or very high quality if dry

15. Kolbász or szalámi?
Kolbász (not hot) and téli szalámi

16. Book or movie?
Both

17. Morning person or night person?
Night person

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
High taxes and poor redistribution of them. Enormous social security costs and almost nothing in return.

19. Buda or Pest side?
Buda, but living in Pest again for a while

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Live and let live
