Police have launched a legal procedure against a shop assistant in central Budapest who used a homemade card reader to steal bank-card data as customers were paying for their purchases, the Budapest police force said. The 24-year-old man then used the data to make online purchases on 18 occasions in February and March this year, the BRFK said on its website.

The bulk purchasing price of milk was 100 forints per litre a year ago but earlier agreed contractual prices have fallen to 75-77 per litre and spot market prices are as low as 72-73 forints per litre, business daily Világgazdaság reported. Production costs for most range between 95- 98 forints per litre according to the paper and only subsidies are keeping many producers from going bankrupt.

In the first quarter, retail sales were up 16% year-on-year at Ft 30 billion. Tesco posted an annual 85% rise in online sales between March and May.
