Two new localities in Bács-Kiskun county, in southern Hungary, have been affected by bird flu, and to prevent the spread of the virus a cull has been ordered, the food safety authority Nébih said on its website on Wednesday.

More than a hundred thousand Hungarians went to their doctors with flu-like symptoms in the past one week and this is the highest number registered over the past ten years. The increase in new patient numbers was 50 percent compared to the previous week, the national epidemiology centre (OEK) said on Wednesday.

A flu epidemic has broken out in Hungary, the National Epidemiology Centre (OEC) announced on Wednesday. According to doctors’ reports monitored by OEC, more than 16,000 patients sought medical treatment for flu symptoms last week, twice as many as during the previous week.
