Hungary dropped to 69th place from 63rd in a new competitiveness ranking of 138 countries compiled by the World Economic Forum. Doing business in Hungary was hampered by “policy instability”, “corruption”, “tax regulations” and an “inadequately educated workforce”, the WEF said. Hungary’s overall index fell to 4.20 points on a scale of 1-7 from 4.25 a year earlier.

The European Commission said it stepped up an infringement procedure against Hungary for restrictions on farmland. “Hungary has a very restrictive system which imposes a complete ban on the acquisition of land by legal entities and an obligation on the buyer to farm the land himself,” the commission said.

Moody’s did not update Hungary’s sovereign rating, although it was on its EU sovereign rating calendar on Friday, the ratings agency reported. Moody’s rates Hungary “Ba1”, one notch below investment grade. Analysts told MTI earlier in the week that Moody’s was likely to upgrade Hungary this year, but probably not on Friday.

Hungary’s tax and customs authority (NAV) said on Tuesday that it is investigating an international money laundering and cigarette smuggling operation, and it has so far apprehended 33 suspects. Vietnamese and Egyptian nationals based in Budapest are suspected of directing the transfer of euros acquired in crimes committed in Europe first to Hungary and then to Slovakia.

US electric car manufacturer Tesla has started to sell its models in Hungary, beginning with its premium ‘S’ model, news website Index reports.
