The Hungarian government submitted a proposal today to abolish the Sunday closings law –legislation passed last year that requires retailers to remain closed on Sundays – and Parliament is scheduled to vote on the proposal tomorrow in an expedited procedure, according to reports.

The Hungarian Parliament today approved legislation putting an end to a year-old law that required retailers to stay closed on Sundays, according to Hungarian news agency MTI. The legislation was approved in an expedited procedure after the government proposed it yesterday. According to reports, the law will still remain in effect for this Sunday.

In a poll conducted recently by online news portal origo.hu, 85% of the siteʼs readers said they support the reopening of stores on Sundays, but government friendly daily Magyar Idők reported today that the increase in payroll resulting from the Sunday reopenings may have to be passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices.

The Hungarian government may be considering scrapping the year-old law that prevents retailers from opening on Sundays, as the Prime Minister’s Office reportedly asked a handful of the country’s larger retailers what they thought of the possibility of reinstating Sunday openings in the past few days, daily Népszabadság reported.
