Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has called on the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein to resign after the high commissioner accused Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of xenophobia and racism during a speech at the 37th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday.

The majority of Hungarians openly reject all asylum seekers and barely more than a third of them would be ready to consider such requests. Tárki has surveyed Hungarian opinion about foreigners for 25 years.

The Hungarian Islamic Community has asked the Constitutional Court to investigate a local government decree passed in the border town Ásotthalom that bans practices of the Muslim faith there, according to news portal index.hu. The community believes the measure is against the constitution.

Since it has been assessed, xenophobia in Hungary has never been as high as it is today, Hungarian online news portal index.hu reported today based on two separate surveys. This comes after a massive campaign by the Hungarian government against “migrants” prior to the October referendum on the EU’s planned refugee quotas, which ended as invalid.

Radical nationalist Jobbik leader Gábor Vona described preliminary turnout data in Hungary’s migrant quota referendum indicating that it would be invalid as a “personal failure” for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. “This game is played for goals, and despite the advantage enjoyed by the prime minister and [ruling] Fidesz, Orbán scored a huge own goal,” Vona told a press conference.
