A commemoration was held in front of Budapest’s US embassy on Sunday, to mark the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC. Addressing the ceremony, US ambassador to Hungary Colleen Bell said that September 11 was a day of pointless violence, but at the same time of heroism and solidarity, too.

Judgment in Hungary, a documentary about the trial of the serial murderers of Roma in Hungary from 2008-09, has received two awards at the Sarajevo film festival, writes vs.hu. Besides the award granted by the festival’s jury (chaired this year by the retired Hungarian director Béla Tarr) the film also received the Human Rights Award.

What can one say about the newly introduced ethics textbook for Hungarian fifth graders? For starters, it is not, strictly speaking, an ethics text. Ethics is not a branch of religion, and being ethical is not the same as following the law or adhering to societal norms. So a textbook that lauds religious virtues and advocates unquestioning civil obedience doesn’t belong in an ethics class.
