As one of the Hungarian papers noted, she was the highest-ranking U.S. diplomat to visit Hungary since the summer of 2011, when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a quick trip to Hungary.

Miskolc local council on Thursday supported the introduction of a so-called sheriff system whereby every district of the city will have a local council law enforcement officer. The number of staff members performing law enforcement duties for Miskolc local council will be raised to 160 on the basis of the council decision.

The Foreign Ministry is allegedly working on a plan to ban certain Americans from Hungary, just as the US has banned six Hungarian government officials, including NAV president Ildikó Vida, the weekly Figyelõ reported.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced the withdrawal of the internet tax on Friday but did not abandon the idea, saying it will be revisited next year. In his usual fortnightly interview with Kossuth Rádió, Orbán said the debate about the tax had gone off course, as the levy is an extension of the existing telecoms tax, but now people question its fairness.

There are some great exceptions, of course, like Sir Bryan Cartledge’s work. But relatively speaking, really good stuff — especially about the 20th century — is difficult to find in English.
