By Anne Zwack: Budapest has evolved so much over the last 25 years as to make many of its features almost unrecognizable and few coffee houses from the previous eras have lived to tell the tale. There is, of course, Gerbeaud while Ruszwurm on the Castle Hill has remained almost exactly the same as it was when my husband was taken there eighty years ago as a treat if he got a good report at school.

Baltazár in Buda Castle, led by Zsolt Litauszki, is one of the country’s best restaurants, with an adjacent B&B that is rated second among Budapest hotels on Tripadvisor. Fine dining in Buda Castle, a Michelin sticker on th door and we tried that particular perfect hamburger which has become even more perfect since rising to fame.

Rain Couldn’t Stop Budapest Gourmet Festival

Some hadn’t noticed that this year’s Gourmet Festival’s official food was the chicken paprikash and the ćevap. As always, as soon as the Gourmet Festival had started, it’d started to rain. The opening was difficult with the constant raining but in the second day, the gourmands were more prepared: the Wellington boots had appeared as well as the rain coats and the wine glasses, too.

The Irish newspaper The Irish Times has published a list of Budapest’s five best restaurants by the country’s top travel author. Reporting on the open-air Gourmet Festival held in Budapest’s Millenáris Park on the website of one of Ireland’s oldest and most-read newspapers, Fionn Davenport says that you can “eat well in the Hungarian capital no matter what time of year you visit”.
