The paper added, however, that a lack of skilled labour in construction could have negative impacts. The Economy Ministry has refused all 28 requests from German discount chain Lidl for exemptions from the so-called “plaza stop” law against the construction of large shops or shopping malls. The law passed in 2012 banned the construction of retail units larger than 300m2 until 2013 and larger than 400m2 from 2014, if no special permit was obtained.

Hungary plans to extend a ban on the construction of big shopping centres in spite of an infringement procedure launched by the European Commission, daily Magyar Nemzet reports. Kristóf Szatmáry, state secretary at the economy ministry, told the paper that the continuation of the ban was justified.
