Hungary has tightened laws and launched programmes over the past years to combat cancer, State Secretary for Health Gábor Zombor said on Wednesday, World Cancer Day. Data by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) show that 27% of deaths were caused by cancer in 2013. For that year, KSH reported 126,800 deaths in Hungary.

The Hungarian Hospital Association supports introducing paid-for services in state hospitals, the association’s president said in business daily Napi Gazdaság’s Thursday edition. Demand for services provided in the private health-care market has increased in recent years, György Velkey told the paper. Introducing paid-for care would greatly benefit underfinanced state hospitals, he said.
