Road accidents were many and trains were delayed, though no flight cancellations were reported from Budapest’s international Liszt Ferenc airport. Police will carry out a nationwide operation called ‘Sober Easter’ from Thursday to Monday to monitor the roads for drunk and erratic driving. National Police head of department József Óberling said during a similar operation last year, some 26,000 checks found 600 drunk drivers, a rate of 2.2%. Alcohol consumption played a part in 10% of the accidents last year, he said.
